(Life Settelment)
A viatical settlement, or "Life Settlement" is a transaction where someone sells their life insurance policy to a third party for a cash payment. (There is a defined amount by law)
The viatical settlement provides the policy owner with a lump sum payment that is greater than the policy's cash surrender value but less than the death benefit amount.
The primary advantage of a viatical settlement is that the policy owner receives immediate cash, which can be critical if they are facing long term care, medical bills or other significant expenses. (Must be over 65)
